About e-TRASH

PikAmSel® pronounced as “Pick Am Sell”  is a user-friendly intuitive mobile app fitted with automatic management and an associated reward system on which the e-TRASH scheme is anchored.

e-TRASH (Electronic Transaction in waste Resources for all userS and Households) which is a brainchild of the Edo NEWMAP is a scheme that has been designed with an end-to-end structure to ensure seamless and sustainable plastic and aluminum waste management system from collection through to processing into useful end product.

The e-TRASH Initiative

One of the most challenging environmental problems faced by cities and urban centers across Nigeria today is the management of vast piles of indiscriminate waste disposal.

It is estimated that of over 32 million tons of waste generated annually across the country, only 20-30% of these are collected. Most of these wastes are generated by households, and in some cases by local industries, artisans, and traders.

And, more often than not, a huge percentage of these wastes find their way into drainages, natural waterways, and other similar flood control infrastructures ultimately clogging them and obstructing the flow of stormwater whenever it rains.

The resultant consequence of this obstruction of stormwater channels by wastes and the disastrous attendant flooding of communities is what Edo NEWMAP e-TRASH plastic and aluminum waste redemption scheme have come to tackle. It is essentially a novel and sustainable Plastic and Aluminum waste redemption initiative to encourage residents and other users of these wastes to gather and exchange them for various reward items.

e-TRASH is a scheme that seeks to reduce littering and indiscriminate disposal of plastic waste by individuals and communities in Nigeria, using an intuitive and creative App with automatic management of an associated reward system, while at the same time contributing to the empowerment of women and girls who account for over 80% of plastic waste aggregators.

The e-TRASH is designed as an end-to-end scheme to ensure a seamless and sustainable plastic waste management system from plastic waste collection through to processing, to useful end products.

About The Pilot Face

Presently, a four-week pilot scheme to observe transactions on the e-TRASH application ‘’PikamSel’’ is ongoing in the two chosen local government areas of Ikpoba Okha and Oredo in Edo state. So far, feedbacks from the field have indicated a great willingness by residents to embrace the waste scheme.

Persons registered as e-TRASH Agents and Users have exhibited much enthusiasm and passions and have recorded huge plastic waste collections in their various locations. In over a week, over 400 kilograms of Plastic wastes that would otherwise have clog our drainage have been collected and redeemed for rewards.

There is every indication, therefore, the scheme is already a success even before the completion of the pilot exercise. During the first week of this novel pilot initiative, a training and enlightenment of all stakeholders which cut across Edo NEWMAP to engage temporary Workforce, waste management C.I.Gs and members of the communities in the three pilot sites of Gapiona, Ogiso and Urora was done.

In the second week, registration of Agents and Users commenced, while third and fourth week was dedicated to observing transaction processes on the ‘’PikamSel’’ application as Users bring their gathered plastic waste materials to the Agent for weighing and rewards.

The Agents who buy from the Users ensure they have substantial amount of plastic waste materials in their storage before calling upon the Processor to come and buy and take to his factory.
